Hi All!
Steve and I hope you’ve had a nice summer and a relaxing break from FinWx meetings, e-mail and activities. A lot has been happening this summer and we’ll be gathering again soon to recap and then focus forward. Here’s a quick summary with links to more information:
The second Mind the Gap workshop brought about 70 participants together in Albany at the start of the summer. One significant outcome led to NSF Award #2237520 which will fund a two-year initiative in conjunction with UCAR and MetEd to develop online learning -aka “COMET modules”- that focus on private sector applications for weather, water and climate science.
FinWx is driving momentum behind the Forum on Climate Linked Economics and the Forum has been invited to be part of the 11th Symposium on the Weather, Water, and Climate Enterprise at the 103rd AMS Annual Meeting in Denver. Your ideas and contributions for the Forum are due now!
A guest speaker will join FinWx in October as part of the 2022 Virtual Forum on Climate Linked Economics. Galen Treuer is the head of Climate Tech and Economic Innovation for Miami-Dade County. This will be an informal and interactive conversation and your participation is encouraged! Galen and Steve will touch on the intersection of climate change, resilience, economic development, and technology innovation. Miami-Dade County is a leader when it comes to forming strategies that build community wealth and resilience through business cycles and climate disruptions. Galen’s initiative envisions a future-ready economy that shrinks inequality, strengthens the environment, and builds a network of entrepreneurs, investors, businesses, academics, and community leaders who can help establish a hub for innovation and investment in blue, green, and climate technology, ultimately creating a regional economic cluster around the opportunities and challenges presented by climate change. We’ll post more on this soon!
The 103rd Annual Meeting of the AMS will be in Denver January 8th - 12th, 2023. Many FinWxers will be there and we’ll be arranging meet-ups and specialized content. More on these details later but please don’t forget that the deadline to submit an abstract is coming up in a few days!!
The next FinWx Meeting will be on September 21st at 3pm ET / Noon PT. Please let me know if you did not receive the invitation or if this meeting is not showing up on your calendar. I look forward to seeing you there!
Sincerely,
Shiela (and Steve)
