The Rain Exchange Pilot Episode

A new podcast from AMS FinWxComm

Welcome to the very first episode of The Rain Exchange, an experimental new podcast from the American Meteorological Society's Committee on Financial Weather and Climate Risk Management (FinWx for short).

Our goal is connect the meteorological and climate science community with the business community. Our topics will be wide ranging from weather operations to applied meteorology to climate change. Business implications will range from energy to agriculture to insurance to supply chain, among many other topics.

In each episode, you'll hear four people talking about the weather and its impact on business operations. We’ll feature a host from the business community and a co-host from the broadcast community. The hosts will be joined by a guest meteorologist/climate scientist who provides weather and climate intelligence to someone who applies that intelligence for business decision-making. That business-person will also be a guest on the podcast!

We connect the meteorologist and the business-person to talk about how weather and climate are incorporated into everyday business decisions. We explore the connection between different kinds of weather and different kinds of business.

AKA: Climate-Linked Economics.

Each episode will feature top rainmakers from the weather-center and from the boardroom as they chat about forecasting the future of the skies and the spreadsheets.

Our hosts in this episode are Steve Bennett and Mike Favetta.

Steve is Chairman of FinWxComm and applies the practical science of climate-change to optimize business practices. Steve is also an entrepreneur with over 25-years in the private and public sectors (ranging from The Weather Channel to UC San Diego/Scripps Oceanography). He co-founded The Demex Group in late 2019 and is part of the team that built the first-of-its-kind platform for analyzing, pricing and transferring climate-linked risks at scale. Demex insurance partners embed climate resiliency solutions into their existing policies, such as homeowners or business lines. Demex API integration localizes real-time pricing at the property address-level within customer networks. For clients with nuanced financial exposures to weather, Demex team of climate scientists analyze historical costs and revenues compared to extreme weather events and produce custom-fit cashflow models.

Mike is an Emmy Award winning AMS certified broadcast meteorologist who's been with News 12 Brooklyn since 2007. He's also the owner of Weather Prep, LLC. Weather Prep clients are in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Texas, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Greece, Slovakia, Singapore, South Africa, and India. Clients work with Mike for expert testimony and forensic meteorology services as well as assessing climate change risk for supply chains and business operation.

Our guests on this episode are John Davis, the chief meteorologist at Everstream Analytics, and Jordan Levi, founder and managing member of Arcadia Asset Management.

Jon and Mike have both been based in Europe. Jon is currently in Barcelona and Mike moved to Milan in 2017. Jordan is home-based in Colorado while Steve is in the Research Triangle, North Carolina.

It’s an energetic exchange: talking about weather, talking about cattle, talking about climate, talking about football, talking about marathons, and all the various decisions that meteorology brings to the table.

We appreciate your listening. This is an experiment for FinWx and we have no idea if we’ve developed something that's of interest to the community.

Please tell us what you think!!
